Jamie Redknapp has warned Tottenham Hotspur that missing Toby Alderweireld for a sustained period could have a huge impact on their title hopes.
The defender suffered an injury during Spurs’ 2-2 draw with Manchester City at The Etihad on Saturday night as the Lilywhites came from a goal down to earn a point against Pep Guardiola’s men.
Jan Vertonghen is already out injured and Spurs fans will be hoping that Alderweireld’s problem does not prove to be too serious.
And former Tottenham midfielder Redknapp has talked up the importance of those two players to Spurs’ hopes of winning the Premier League title this season.
Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Redknapp said: “Tottenham were very fortunate to rescue a point against Manchester City but it may have come at a cost.
“They will be desperately hoping Toby Alderweireld’s hamstring injury isn’t serious. Tottenham are already without Jan Vertonghen at the back while Kevin Wimmer, his replacement at the Etihad, really struggled and was taken off at half-time.
“Vertonghen and Alderweireld are the Premier League’s best centre back pairing and would be a big miss for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.”
Tottenham are currently gearing up for their clash against Wycombe in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday as they look to bounce back to winning ways.
They then travel to Sunderland in their next Premier League game.
