Jamie Redknapp sends blunt warning to Arsenal about Alexis Sanchez
Jamie Redknapp says it is crucial that Arsenal tie down Alexis Sanchez to a new contract...
Jamie Redknapp has warned Arsenal they they cannot afford to let Alexis Sanchez leave the club because it would send out the wrong message.
The Chile international’s future at The Emirates has been a relentless source of speculation in recent weeks after both he and Mesut Ozil entered into the final 18 months of their contracts at the north London club.
Sanchez’s current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2018 and both he and Ozil are believed to be in talks with the Gunners about the possibility of extending their deals beyond next summer.
Redknapp feels that Sanchez is a key member of the Arsenal side and has warned that the Gunners can ill afford to let their most talismanic player leave the club.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Redknapp said: “The problem Arsenal have is he’ll know his market value – and he’s reportedly received some big financial offers from China.
“He’ll also know there’s interest from other Premier League clubs, as well as the major teams in Europe because he’s only got 18 months remaining on his contract. Apart from Barcelona, there’s no team he wouldn’t get into.
“Arsenal can’t afford to lose him. On the pitch, he’s their top scorer. Their talisman. But off the field, his departure would also send out the wrong message to players Arsenal are trying to sign. They want to come to the club because it’s one of the best in the world but also because of players such as Sanchez who are there.
“His exit would give players like Mesut Ozil reason to question whether the club is going in the right direction, too – and an excuse to consider their own futures.”
Sanchez will be expecting to feature for Arsenal when the Gunners take on Burnley at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
