Jamie Redknapp sends blunt warning to Granit Xhaka after Arsenal red card
Jamie Redknapp warns Granit Xhaka that he must learn to temper his aggressiveness at Arsenal...
Jamie Redknapp has warned Granit Xhaka that he will have to learn to control his temper after his red card in Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Burnley on Sunday.
The Swiss midfielder was given his marching orders in the second half for a reckless tackle after losing possession.
Arsenal eventually won the game thanks to Alexis Sanchez’s last-gasp penalty at The Emirates to move the Gunners up to second place in the Premier League table.
However, it was Xhaka’s second red card of the season since his arrival at Arsenal from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer transfer window.
And former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp has warned that the midfielder will need to learn to temper that side of his game if he is to be a success in the Premier League.
Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Redknapp said: “Granit Xhaka is not a nasty player but far too often the red mist descends and he makes reckless tackles.
“He was rightly sent off for a brainless two-footed lunge against Burnley on Sunday and could have cost Arsenal a vital three points.
“That was Xhaka’s second red card of the season for his club and he can have no complaints. You simply cannot jump into tackles with both feet off the ground.
“Xhaka has plenty of talent but sometimes when a player lacks a little bit of pace they dive into challenges to make up ground.
“There is no reason why he cannot change but it will be up to Arsene Wenger and Xhaka’s team-mates to help him channel his energy in the right way.”
Arsenal return to FA Cup action with a trip to Southampton in the fourth round this weekend.
