Jamie Redknapp: This Liverpool player is Jurgen Klopp’s shining light
The former Liverpool midfielder talks up Philippe Coutinho after the playmaker's cameo appearance at Southampton
Jamie Redknapp has hailed Philippe Coutinho as Liverpool’s shining light ahead of their trip to Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.
The Brazil international made his long-awaited return to first-team action on Wednesday night as Jurgen Klopp introduced the attacking midfielder with the Reds trailing 1-0 at Southampton.
The 24-year-old was unable to inspire a comeback despite impressing during his 29-minute cameo at St Mary’s as Liverpool slumped to a 1-0 loss in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final.
Coutinho suffered a serious ankle injury during the first half of Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Sunderland in the Premier League at Anfield in late November.
The Brazilian had scored five goals and made five assists in 12 Premier League appearances for his setback.
Former Liverpool captain Redknapp hailed Coutinho as the one big positive for Klopp from their League Cup defeat ahead of their trip to Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
“He is a special footballer. His first pass was a lovely outside of the foot pass,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“He had some beautiful pieces of play. He lit Liverpool up at times. At the times, other players weren’t on his level. Coutinho was a shining light.”
