Jamie Redknapp: This Liverpool player looks more confident
The former Liverpool captain is full of praise for Loris Karius after his performance at Southampton
Jamie Redknapp has praised Loris Karius’s performance in the League Cup on Wednesday night despite Liverpool’s 1-0 loss to Southampton in the first leg of their semi-final clash at St Mary’s.
Karius was restored to the Liverpool line-up for their goalless draw with Plymouth in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon as Liverpool were unable to find a way past the League Two side’s stubborn defence.
The 23-year-old managed to keep his first-team place for their trip to the Saints on Wednesday night and the shot stopper produced a number of good saves to limit Southampton a 1-0 first-leg win.
Karius was signed in a £4.7m deal from Mainz in the summer transfer window as Klopp looked to bolster his goalkeeping options at the Anfield outfit following Simon Mignolet’s erratic performances.
However, the German youngster struggled in a 4-3 loss at Bournemouth and 2-2 draw with West Ham United which led to Klopp recalling Mignolet to his starting line-up.
Former Liverpool captain Redknapp was full of praise for Karius after his confident performance in their League Cup clash.
“He did really well. It was a talking point before the game. If you’re a Southampton player, you want to test him. There was a good early save for him,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“I don’t think he could do anything about the goal. He looked confident. At times when the ball comes into the box, he does flap a bit. In terms of the whole game, I would say he did well.”
