Jamie Redknapp: This Man United star doesn’t get the credit he deserves
Jamie Redknapp discusses Wayne Rooney's form for Manchester United in recent weeks...
Jamie Redknapp has claimed that Wayne Rooney does not get the credit he deserves after he became Manchester United’s all-time top goal-scorer over the weekend.
The Red Devils striker moved onto 250 goals for the Old Trafford club after he scored a stoppage-time free-kick to earn Manchester United a 1-1 draw at Stoke City on Saturday.
Rooney has faced plenty of criticism for his performances for both club and country in recent months but there can be no doubting his contribution to Manchester United over the years.
And former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp feels that Rooney deserves more credit than he has been getting in recent months.
Writing in his column for The Daily Mail, Redknapp said: “When I heard that Wayne Rooney had broken Bobby Charlton’s Manchester United goal record, I was hoping he had done so with a blockbuster strike. Rooney did not disappoint.
“From bicycle kicks to screamers, I love Rooney’s repertoire and his last-gasp free-kick at Stoke was such a worthy way to bring up his 250th United goal.
“I played against Wayne for Tottenham on his Everton debut in 2002. Even at 16, the way he moved and struck the ball suggested he was going to be some player. What he has gone on to achieve has not surprised me.
“Rooney may not get the credit he deserves but there is not much that can top being the record scorer for Manchester United and England.”
Rooney will be expecting to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils take on Hull City in the return leg of their League Cup semi-final clash on Thursday night.
Manchester United are currently sixth in the Premier League table.
