Jamie Redknapp: What Jordan Henderson brings to the Liverpool team
The former Liverpool midfielder says Jurgen Klopp's side are missing Jordan Henderson's influence
Jamie Redknapp says Liverpool are feeling the absence of their captain Jordan Henderson after Wednesday night’s 1-0 loss to Southampton in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final.
The England international was forced off in the second half of their 1-0 win against title rivals Manchester City at Anfield on New Year’s Eve due to a heel injury.
Henderson has missed Liverpool’s stalemates with Sunderland and Plymouth in their last two games before the Three Lions midfielder sat out their 1-0 defeat by the Saints.
Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum started in the heart of midfield but the pair were unable to get a stranglehold on the League Cup clash in the absence of Henderson.
Speaking to Sky Sports after Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat by Southampton in the EFL Cup, Redknapp highlighted Henderson’s absence a key reason behind the Reds’s struggles.
“They missed the captain, Jordan Henderson, we shouldn’t underestimate what he does, he brings energy to that midfield, I think they really missed his energy, influence and drive in there,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
Liverpool are in second place in the Premier League table and five points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
The Reds make the trip to Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.
