John Hartson: Why Chelsea haven’t wrapped up the title already
The former Arsenal striker warns Chelsea not to get complacent in the Premier League title race
John Hartson is adamant that it is too early to give Chelsea the Premier League title despite Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Sunderland.
The Reds missed out on the chance to cut Chelsea’s lead to three points at the top of the table ahead of the west London side’s short trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s side twice squandered a lead to draw 2-2 with David Moyes’s struggling Sunderland outfit to leave the Merseyside club five points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
Antonio Conte’s side have won their last 13 Premier League games and have the chance to equal Arsenal’s record winning run if Chelsea manage to beat their bitter rivals Tottenham.
Speaking to BBC’s 606 podcast during Liverpool’s surprise 2-2 stalemate with Sunderland, former Arsenal and West Ham striker Hartson explained why he believes it is too early to hand the title to Chelsea.
“Arsenal, Manchester City, Spurs – you cannot say Chelsea have got it already. We are only half way through,” Hartson said.
“You would be brave to go against Chelsea, they have some players at the top of their game, but you can’t rule against anyone else at this time. You can’t give them the title now.”
Chelsea finished in tenth place in the Premier League table last season which prompted the Blues to appoint ex-Juventus boss Conte as their new manager.
