Jordan Henderson lays down challenge for Liverpool team-mates ahead of Southampton clash
The Liverpool captain wants the Reds to react against Southampton in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday night
Jordan Henderson has challenged Liverpool to react in the right way ahead of the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final against Southampton at Anfield on Wednesday night.
Liverpool lost 3-2 to Swansea City at Anfield on Saturday afternoon after Iceland international Gylfi Sigurdsson netted an 74th-minute winner.
The Merseyside outfit lost 1-0 to the Saints in the first leg at St Mary’s after Nathan Redmond scored a first-half winner on the south coast.
Liverpool managed to return to winning ways in midweek thanks to a 1-0 win over League Two side Plymouth Argyle in their FA Cup third-round replay mid-week.
However, Jurgen Klopp’s side lost to Swansea despite Roberto Firmino scoring twice to help Liverpool come from 2-0 down to level at 2-2 before Sigurdsson’s winner.
Speaking to BT Sport after Liverpool’s disappointing defeat at Anfield, captain Henderson urged his team-mates to make a statement against Southampton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
“No-one knows that, we’ll find out at the end of the season,” Henderson said.
“But it’s how you react after defeats, that’s how you can show character, show your spirit and show how good you are as a team in the game after.
“The next game is very important for us, and we need to react in the right way.”
Liverpool finished in eighth place in the Premier League table last season.
