Jose Mourinho makes honest admission about Anthony Martial at Man United
The Manchester United manager addresses Anthony Martial's current situation at Old Trafford
Jose Mourinho has insisted that he can’t justify giving Anthony Martial persistent chances to shine in the Manchester United side if the France striker fails to grab his opportunity.
The 21-year-old was a surprise omission from Mourinho’s squad for their 1-1 draw with Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium last weekend as Wayne Rooney scored an added-time equaliser.
Martial started on the left wing for the visit of Liverpool but the France star failed to exploit the inexperience of debutant right-back Trent Alexander Arnold during a 1-1 draw with the Merseyside outfit.
The forward was signed in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 AS Monaco in the 2015 summer transfer window under Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal.
Martial scored 11 times in 49 appearances in his first season at Old Trafford but the French star has struggled to recreate his initial performances under Mourinho.
The Manchester United manager has given an update on Martial’s current situation at Old Trafford.
“I don’t think Martial has lost his focus,” Mourinho told The Daily Express.
“I just think he didn’t catch with both hands a big opportunity he had.
“When we spoke about why Memphis Depay was sold we spoke about it being the only position where we have over booking. And we have still five players for these positions. I cannot give to one player chances to play and kill the others. I think I did that [kill] with Memphis by considering him the last option and by not giving him any option.
“With the other guys, I think even you would be here now asking me why Juan Mata is not playing or Marcus Rashford doesn’t have a chance or why Jesse Lingard, a national team player, is not playing.
“So this is the reality. We have Rashford, Lingard, Mata, Mkhitaryan and Martial and I cannot give to the same player chance after chance after chance and not considering the effort of the others.
“Anthony played against Liverpool, a big match for us and for him too, and then the next game I went to Mata and Mkhitaryan. This is the situation.
“When I have five players for two positions, I have to praise the good performance and for that I have to take people out of the team. That’s simple.”
Manchester United are in sixth place in the Premier League table and 14 points adrift of current leaders Chelsea.
