Jose Mourinho makes honest admission about Memphis Depay’s Man United exit
Jose Mourinho reveals that Manchester United have a buy-back option on Memphis Depay after his move to Lyon
Jose Mourinho has admitted that Manchester United have the option to buy back Memphis Depay after his transfer to French side Lyon on Friday.
The Dutchman’s move to the Ligue 1 outfit was confirmed on Friday after weeks of speculation about his future at the Old Trafford club.
Depay struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford following his transfer to the club from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2015.
The winger failed to hold down a regular spot in the Manchester United first team this season.
Mourinho feels the move to Lyon is the right one for the Netherlands international but confirmed that the Red Devils do have the option to buy Depay back in the future because of his potential.
Asked if Manchester United have a buy-back option, Mourinho told the club’s website: “Of course, because, potentially, he is a very good player.
“I think when Mr [Louis] van Gaal decided to buy him, he did well. He knew him very well from the national team, he was very young in the World Cup, he had flashes of top quality.
“He was playing well in Holland too; we know that the Dutch league is not the same, but he was showing very good things. I think Mr. van Gaal and United did well to buy him – he didn’t succeed in these 18 months, I would say, but he’s very young.
“I think it’s important for the club to keep control of this talent and we wish that he plays very well at Olympique Lyon. And why not, to come back here, because everybody likes him.”
Manchester United are currently gearing up for their Premier League clash against Stoke City on Saturday afternoon.
