The Manchester United manager discusses the future of Bastian Schweinsteiger at Old Trafford
Jose Mourinho says Bastian Schweinsteiger could be in line to get more chances in the first team after the midfielder scored in Manchester United’s 4-0 win against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday afternoon.
The retired German international was handed his first start of the current campaign in all competitions for the visit of the Latics after the Bayern Munich legend fell out-of-favour under new manager Jose Mourinho following the sacking of Louis van Gaal last May.
However, the Manchester United boss gave the former Bayern Munich star a chance to impress in the fourth-round tie at Old Trafford and Schweinsteiger repaid his coach’s faith with their fourth goal.
The World Cup winner used his experience to guide a finish into the net with nine minutes remaining at Old Trafford.
Speaking to BBC Sport ahead of Manchester United’s 4-0 win against Wigan, Mourinho provided an update on Schweinsteiger’s future at Old Trafford.
“Basti may be a surprise for some as we made that decision not to have him in the squad for a couple of months,” Mourinho said.
“Since the moment he’s been back with the team, he’s fighting also for his chances with so many matches as we have now. We’ve the postponed match [at Manchester City] because of the EFL Cup final, the Europa League and the fact that Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay left the club.
“The squad is shorter and we need him. [Today] is an opportunity for him to play and show that he is ready – even for the Premier League.”
Manchester United are in sixth place in the Premier League table.
