Jose Mourinho reacts to Liverpool’s draw after Man United win
The Manchester United manager was surprised to learn of Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light
Jose Mourinho welcomed news of Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland after Manchester United were 2-0 winners against West Ham United in Monday’s late kick-off.
Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to record three points against one of the Premier League’s relegation candidates after Jermain Defoe scored twice from the penalty spot to deny Liverpool a vital win.
Manchester United took on West Ham United in Monday’s late kick-off and the Red Devils eased to three points courtesy of goals from Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the second half.
The 20-time English champions moved to within five points of Liverpool after the Merseyside outfit dropped points at the Stadium of Light.
However, Mourinho wasn’t aware of the Liverpool stalemate until after Manchester United’s 2-0 win against West Ham United.
“What was the Liverpool result? [Interviewer: “2-2.”] I didn’t know it was 2-2. So we have gained two points on Liverpool,” Mourinho told MUTV.
“I was thinking about Chelsea and Tottenham [playing on Tuesday], because one of them will lose or both will get the draw. But also Liverpool, so we have gained points on the second-placed team and we play them at Old Trafford. If we play with 75,000 then we can win.”
Manchester United moved to within a point of the top four ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Bournemouth on Tuesday night.
The Red Devils finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season.
