Jose Mourinho reacts to Marouane Fellaini’s display for Man United v Liverpool
Jose Mourinho has his say on the Belgian midfielder after Manchester United's impressive comeback against Liverpool
Jose Mourinho has explained why he opted to use Marouane Fellaini rather than Marcus Rashford as a second-half substitute for Manchester United against Liverpool on Sunday.
The Belgian midfielder came off the bench in the second half with the Red Devils trailing 1-0 to James Milner’s penalty at Old Trafford and helped Mourinho’s men conjure an equaliser against the Merseyside club.
Fellaini’s header rebounded off the post late on, allowing Zlatan Ibrahimovic to net the vital equaliser for Mourinho’s men.
And Mourinho was delighted by the Belgian’s impact as the Red Devils came from behind to earn a point against Jurgen Klopp’s side at Old Trafford.
Speaking to Manchester United’s website after the game, Mourinho said: “I had one more option: Fellaini or Rashford. But I saw so many yellow shirts in the box, in front of the box, that I thought probably my players would lose a bit of the emotional balance and would go for a more direct approach.
“To go with a more direct approach, it has to be with Marouane and he was an important player for us.”
The draw left the Red Devils in sixth place in the Premier League table and still 12 points behind leaders Chelsea.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are third and seven points behind Chelsea as they look to keep pace with the Blues in the race for the title.
