Jose Mourinho: Sir Alex Ferguson deserves to watch Man United win
The current Manchester United manager was happy to deliver three points for Sir Alex Ferguson on the club legend's 75th birthday
Jose Mourinho was pleased that Manchester United managed to beat Middlesbrough 2-1 in front of Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford on the legend’s 75th birthday.
The Red Devils eased to victory over Boro in a manner befitting Ferguson’s great teams of the past after the hosts came from 1-0 down to secure three points with two late goals.
Manchester United were denied two goals due to an offside and a high boot before Sunderland made the breakthrough thanks to Grant Leadbitter’s close-range finish in the 67th minute.
However, the hosts were level with five minutes remaining after Zlatan Ibrahimovic teed up Anthony Martial before Paul Pogba headed past Victor Valdes to seal three points.
Ferguson celebrated his 75th birthday with a trip to Manchester United on New Year’s Eve and the ex-manager looked relieved to see the Red Devils come from behind.
Speaking at his post-match media conference after Manchester United’s 2-1 win, Mourinho admitted that he was delighted that Ferguson got to watch a home victory.
“He deserves to come here and for people to remember the game not just for his 75th birthday but also for the kind of football we played and the fact that we managed to bring the fans to the pitch,” Mourinho is quoted as saying by United’s website.
“In the last 20 minutes, the fans were on the pitch – they were not in the stands. And this is a credit to the players, who showed amazing character to go and go and go and go. This time we were successful and it’s three more points.”
