Jose Mourinho: This is why Bastian Schweinsteiger will be staying at Man United
The Manchester United manager provides an update on his experienced midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger
Jose Mourinho is adamant that Bastian Schweinsteiger will remain at Manchester United after the midfielder scored in their 4-0 win against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup on Sunday.
The retired Germany international made his first start of the 2016-17 season in the fourth round as Manchester United welcomed their former coach Warren Joyce and his Wigan side to Old Trafford.
Schweinsteiger netted Manchester United’s final goal in a 4-0 rout with nine minutes remaining after Marouane Fellaini, Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan had all found the back of the net at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils midfielder had been linked with a potential switch in January after falling out-of-favour under Mourinho and being sent to train with the club’s Under-23 side before being brought back from his exile.
Speaking at his post-match media conference after Manchester United’s 4-0 win, Mourinho addressed the issue of Schweinsteiger’s future at Old Trafford.
“He is staying and he is going on the Europa League list because we opened spaces with [Memphis] Depay and [Morgan] Schneiderlin leaving. We don’t have many players; in midfield we don’t have many options, so obviously he is an option,” Mourinho said.
“Ninety minutes today was probably too hard for him but it was important for him to have an impact with his volley and now I think he’s happy. If he was a good professional when he was not playing, now he’s having some minutes and opportunities he’s going to be the same good professional. With so many matches and competitions, he’s going to be an option.”
Schweinsteiger moved to Manchester United in a £6.7m deal from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the 2015 summer transfer window.
