Juan Mata issues warning to Man United: This midfielder is playing really good
The Manchester United midfielder talks up Oriol Romeu ahead of EFL Cup final at Wembley next month
Juan Mata has warned Manchester United that Oriol Romeu will prove a formidable foe when the Red Devils take on Southampton in the EFL Cup final.
The Saints booked their place in the Wembley final thanks to a stunning 2-0 aggregate win against Manchester United’s bitter rivals Liverpool after Shane Long netted an added-time winner in a 1-0 victory at Anfield on Wednesday night.
Jose Mourinho’s side travelled to Hull City with the comfort of a 2-0 lead after Mata and Marouane Fellaini scored the decisive goals in the first leg at Old Trafford earlier this month.
However, Hull produced a performance that defied their Premier League position to seal an unlikely 2-1 win against Manchester United, although Paul Pogba’s goal ensured the visitors progressed on away goals.
Romeu and Mata were team-mates during their time together at Chelsea before the defensive midfielder moved to Southampton last season.
Writing in his personal blog One Hour Behind, Mata warned Manchester United that Romeu will be a difficult opponent.
“I’ve never been able to win this competition in my previous years in England, so I can’t be more motivated. I’ve been hoping to play this final for a very long time!” Mata said.
“It’s going to be against Southampton, a difficult rival where my good friend Oriol Romeu is playing (and really good, by the way). It’s just great having the chance to win the second title of the season.”
