Jurgen Klopp gives latest Liverpool injury update on Philippe Coutinho ahead of Southampton clash

The Liverpool manager confirms Philippe Coutinho will be included in his squad for their trip to Southampton

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Philippe Coutinho will be involved in the Liverpool squad for their trip to Southampton for the first leg of their League Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.

The Brazil international has been sidelined since November after the playmaker suffered a serious ankle injury during the first half of their 2-0 win against Sunderland at Anfield.

Coutinho had made a brilliant start to the 2016-17 season under Klopp after a return of five goals and five assists in 13 Premier League appearances.

Liverpool have managed to stay on course in the Premier League title race, although current leaders Chelsea are five points clear of Klopp’s side.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Southampton in the League Cup Wednesday night, Klopp provided an update on Coutinho’s fitness.

“I think Phil is fit enough for being part of the squad,” Klopp said.

“That means it could be minutes, how much I don’t know. It depends on the game, of course. He is on a very good way.

“It was six or seven weeks, something like this, so that’s long. And so he needs minutes in training, especially, but then of course as soon as possible minutes in games.

“We will see how we do it, there [has been] no final decision made until now.

“I think [today] was the third complete session he did with the team, tomorrow again would be the fourth. It’s not that many, but for being in the squad, I think it’s enough. And then we will see.”

Liverpool were 6-0 winners against Southampton in the League Cup quarter-final at St Mary’s in Klopp’s first season in charge of the Merseyside outfit.

The pair played out a goalless draw in the Premier League on the south coast earlier this season.
