Jurgen Klopp: This Liverpool signing is forcing Simon Mignolet to train hard
The Liverpool manager praises Loris Karius's attitude in training and says the German could start against Plymouth
Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Loris Karius has a big chance of starting Liverpool’s home clash against Plymouth in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.
The Germany Under-21 international dropped to the bench following his poor performances against Bournemouth and West Ham United ahead of the Merseyside derby.
Liverpool are unbeaten since Mignolet was recalled to Klopp’s starting line-up after a run of five victories and one draw in their last six Premier League games.
Mignolet has managed to keep three clean sheets during that run to suggest that he could remain Klopp’s first-choice goalkeeper for the remainder of the season.
Speaking at his pre-match media conference on Friday ahead of Liverpool’s home clash against Plymouth in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon, Klopp praised Karius’s attitude in training and added that the summer signing is pushing Mignolet hard for a starting spot.
Asked whether Karius could start in the FA Cup encounter, Klopp replied:
Klopp continued: “[He has] trained outstandingly good. It’s good to see. It’s difficult to speak about things like this in public, because you make all of these things big stories – that’s a little bit of the problem.
“But, how we said before, we cannot ignore the pressure you make. That’s how it is. We have to cope with it, we have to deal with it and that’s why we made the change.
“I was sure Loris would benefit from this step back, if you want, or step aside or whatever.
“Simon has done a really outstandingly good job for us since he has been playing again. Loris forces him to train on the highest level because we have two really good goalkeepers. So, it was good for him.”
Liverpool signed Karius in a £4.7m deal from Bundesliga outfit Mainz in the summer transfer window.
