Jurgen Klopp: What I really think about Philippe Coutinho’s new Liverpool contract
The Liverpool manager hails Philippe Coutinho as an incredibly positive character at Anfield after his new contract
Jurgen Klopp believes Philippe Coutinho’s new deal highlights the midfielder’s faith in the Liverpool project.
The Brazil international has signed a new long-term contract with the Merseyside outfit which will reportedly keep the South American playmaker at the Anfield side until 2022.
Coutinho has been a key player for Klopp since the former Borussia Dortmund manager took over the reins at the Merseyside club from Brendan Rodgers back in October 2015.
The ex-Inter Milan midfielder scored five goals and made five assists in 12 appearances in the 2016-17 season before Coutinho succumbed to an ankle injury in November.
Liverpool have endured a tough start to 2017 after failing to win a Premier League game following stalemates with Sunderland and Manchester United before a 3-2 loss to Swansea City.
Speaking to Liverpool’s website about Coutinho’s new contract, Klopp explained why the club’s supporters should be encouraged by the Liverpool midfielder’s commitment.
“This is wonderful news and I know everyone associated with LFC will be delighted when hearing this today,” Klopp said.
“I think everyone knows what a great footballer Phil is, that is not in question – but not everyone sees what an incredibly positive character he is and what a big influence he is on the dressing room.
“I knew of Phil before I came to Liverpool and I was well aware of what a talent he was, but since arriving here I have not only witnessed his ability up close, but also his ever-continuing development. He is truly world-class – in that very top bracket.
“The fact he wants to stay here and be part of what we are looking to build and develop shows his personal commitment is to make himself better and be an integral part of something that is very special.
“We have total belief in our project, but when a player of Phil’s calibre and status commits for this length of time it shows that our faith is shared throughout the game. He knows he can fulfil his dreams and ambitions here at Liverpool. This is a big statement.
“I look forward to seeing Phil create many more great memories and moments for this club.”
Coutinho moved to Liverpool in an £8.5m deal from Inter Milan in January 2013.
