Paul Merson tells Jurgen Klopp this Liverpool signing could help secure the title

Liverpool need to sign Virgil van Dijk if Jurgen Klopp harbours hopes of winning the Premier League title, according to Paul Merson

Paul Merson believes Liverpool would win the Premier League title if Jurgen Klopp signed Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk in the January transfer window.

The Netherlands international has established himself as one of the Premier League’s foremost defenders over the past 18 months at St Mary’s following his £5m switch to Southampton from Scottish Premier League champions Celtic.

Van Dijk was linked with a move to Liverpool earlier this season, although Chelsea and Manchester City have emerged as supposed front-runners to sign the Dutch centre-half in the current transfer window.

Liverpool are the Premier League’s leading goal-scorers after netting 48 times in their opening 20 games of the 2016-17 season, however, Klopp’s side have also conceded 23 times in the title race so far.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson has earmarked Van Dijk as a signing that could make all the difference for Liverpool in the title race.

“If Liverpool want to win the league I still think they need to go and sign Virgil van Dijk. It doesn’t matter that Southampton are a game away from a cup final,” Merson wrote in his Daily Star column.

“They are a selling club and money talks. If Liverpool really wanted him they could get him. But right now their back four is not good enough to win the title.”

Merson added: “They are making too many mistakes at the back and some of them are bad ones. They have to buy a defender, and Van Dijk is the best around.

“I think he’s been easily the best in the Premier League this season. Other teams might be in for him but Liverpool need him the most.”
