Paul Merson states surprise prediction for Liverpool v Chelsea
The former Arsenal midfielder can't see Chelsea beating Liverpool at Anfield
Paul Merson has boldly claimed that Chelsea will fail to secure three points against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Antonio Conte’s side will face a Reds outfit devoid of confidence after a 2-1 loss to Championship outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup fourth round in Saturday’s early kick-off at Anfield.
In fact, Liverpool have only managed to win one of their eight games in 2017 so far after a 1-0 victory over League Two minnows Plymouth Argyle in their third-round replay at Home Park.
Chelsea, on the other hand, have won 15 of their last 16 Premier League games and the west London side were 4-0 winners against Brentford in their FA Cup fourth-round clash at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the clash between Liverpool and Chelsea at Anfield on Tuesday night, former Arsenal midfielder Merson tipped a 1-1 stalemate between the bitter rivals.
“I’m going to throw a bombshell out there – I cannot see Chelsea winning at Anfield. Forget about Liverpool’s recent struggles, this is going to be Chelsea’s toughest game of the season so far. Tuesday night, under the floodlights and a game Liverpool cannot afford to lose – things will be different,” Merson said.
“If Chelsea win, and then beat Arsenal, then the title race is virtually done and dusted. But I see plenty more twists and turns in the title race yet, starting with a draw here. That being said, Chelsea will be more than happy leaving Merseyside with a point.”
Liverpool haven’t won a Premier League game since a 1-0 win against Manchester City on New Year’s Eve.
