Paul Merson states prediction for Liverpool v Wolves
The former Arsenal midfielder doesn't envisage an upset at Anfield on Saturday despite Liverpool's poor form
Paul Merson is backing Liverpool to beat Wolves thanks to home advantage in the FA Cup fourth round at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds suffered the humiliation of crashing out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night after a 1-0 loss to Southampton in the second leg of their semi-final clash at Anfield following Shane Long’s added-time winner.
Liverpool have only managed to win of their last seven games in all competitions in 2017 so far to result in some pressure being heaped on Jurgen Klopp.
The 18-time English champions required a third-round replay to get past Plymouth Argyle after a 1-0 win at Home Park thanks to Lucas Leiva’s winner earlier this month.
Writing in his Sky Sports column ahead of Saturday’s early kick-off in the FA Cup, Merson issued his backing for Liverpool despite their recent poor form under Klopp.
“Liverpool appear to have hit a brick wall, they look tired. On a positive note, though, they are making the chances, they’re just not putting them away,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“This a real opportunity for Wolves because I can’t see Jurgen Klopp playing a strong team, what with Chelsea on the horizon. I have to go for a Liverpool win because they’re at home, but things could be difficult for them at Anfield.”
Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League table and 10 points adrift of current leaders Chelsea.
