Paul Merson states prediction for Man United v Liverpool
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes Manchester United will beat Liverpool after watching the Reds's EFL Cup performance
Paul Merson believes Liverpool will struggle to contend with Manchester United’s attack when Jurgen Klopp’s side make the trip to Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils have won their last nine games in all competitions to build momentum under new manager Jose Mourinho after Manchester United’s 2-0 win against Hull City in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final.
The 20-time English champions have won their last six Premier League fixtures to move the Red Devils up to sixth place in the table and three points adrift of the top four heading into the Premier League weekend.
Liverpool, on the other hand, lost 1-0 to Southampton in their EFL Cup last-four clash at St Mary’s following Nathan Redmond’s first-half strike on the south coast.
Klopp’s side have failed to win their last three games in all competitions following stalemates with Sunderland and Plymouth before their defeat by the Saints.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Liverpool’s uncertain defence will struggle to cope with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and his team-mates at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
“Playing last means the rest of the top six might have won so it’s a game neither side can afford to lose. I am going with Man United,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“I watched Liverpool in the EFL Cup and they were poor at the back, and if Zlatan Ibrahimovic is fit then I don’t see how they can cope with United.
“Defensively they were all over the place at Southampton and James Milner could have a long day against Marcus Rashford or Anthony Martial.
“United have won six on the spin in the league but they started this run sixth in the league and they are still sixth.
“I think they are big players if they win this match, but if they lose then you are looking at whether they will get in the top four. That’s how tight it is at the top at the moment.”
