Jose Mourinho sends warning to players ahead of Man United v Wigan Athletic
The Manchester United manager is underestimating the threat posed by Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup fifth round
Jose Mourinho has warned his Manchester United players to expect a difficult game against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup firth round on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils booked their place in the EFL Cup final at Wembley next month on Thursday night despite losing 2-1 to Premier League strugglers Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.
While Manchester United can take solace from setting up a clash against Southampton in the Wembley showpiece, the Red Devils saw their 17-game unbeaten run come to an end.
Mourinho’s side were 4-0 winners against Championship side Reading in the previous round as Wayne Rooney equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 249 Manchester United goals before the captain surpassed the legend’s tally with his dramatic equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Stoke City last weekend.
Wigan are hovering above the Championship relegation zone as their former youth coach looks to prove a point to his former employers.
Speaking at his post-match media conference after Manchester United’s surprise 2-1 loss to Hull, Mourinho warned his players that the Latics will prove tricky opponents.
“It’s another difficult game against Wigan. They didn’t play, they are fresh, preparing and will be ready with special motivation for Warren [Joyce] and his players,” Mourinho said.
“Now we go home, it’ll take three hours to arrive, and have to prepare again. We will change some players and give some opportunities, some fresh legs to the team and, hopefully, we can do it.”
