Mark Lawrenson states prediction for Man United v Wigan

The former Liverpool legend is confident that Manchester United will ease to a comfortable win against Wigan Athletic

Mark Lawrenson is confident that Manchester United will ease to a comfortable win against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils will host the Championship strugglers at Old Trafford just days after the 20-time English champions reached their first final under new manager Jose Mourinho.

Indeed, Manchester United produced an unconvincing performance in a 2-1 loss to Hull City in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final at KCOM Stadium.

Of course the visitors progressed on aggregate thanks to a 2-0 win against the Tigers in the first leg at Old Trafford over a fortnight ago.

Still, Wigan can take some heart from Manchester United’s abject performance against the Premier League strugglers in the EFL Cup clash.

Writing in his BBC Sport column, former Liverpool defender Lawrenson played down the chances of an upset at Old Trafford.

“This is a great tie for Wigan manager Warren Joyce, who was in charge of United’s Under-21 side until November,” Lawrenson said.

“And it is a great tie for the Latics’ finances, because they will get a massive pay-day regardless of the outcome.

“But as far as the game itself goes, in terms of making progress in the FA Cup, it is a great tie for United.”

Manchester United are in sixth place in the Premier League table and 14 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.
