Mark Lawrenson praised Wolverhampton Wanderers for a perfect first half after the Championship side were shock 2-1 winners against Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
Paul Lambert’s side made the perfect start on Merseyside after Richard Stearman broke the deadlock inside the first minute after Liverpool struggled to defend another set-piece.
Wolves were 2-0 up before half-time when former Aston Villa midfielder Andreas Weimann rounded Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius and slotted into the vacated net at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp turned to his bench in an attempt to rescue the fourth-round clash but substitutes Philippe Coutinho, Daniel Sturridge and Emre Can failed to make the difference.
Divock Origi did net a late consolation goal for the hosts but Wolves managed to hang on to seal their place in the FA Cup fifth-round draw.
Speaking to BBC Sport after Liverpool’s shock FA Cup exit, Lawrenson heaped praise on Wolves after another disappointing performance from the home side.
“The reason Wolves have won this game is because of an absolutely perfect first 45 minutes. They scored two beautifully worked goals,” Lawrenson said.
In the second half Liverpool huffed and puffed but when you think about it, Wolves thoroughly deserved their win, an outstanding performance.”
