Martin Keown: Chelsea couldn’t live with this Tottenham player
The Arsenal legend was impressed with the performance of the Tottenham midfield, particularly Mousa Dembele
Chelsea couldn’t live with Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele during their 2-0 loss at White Hart Lane on Wednesday night, according to Martin Keown.
Antonio Conte’s side suffered their first defeat in 13 top-flight outings as Chelsea failed to equal Arsenal’s record of 14 successive Premier League victories in north London.
Dele Alli broke the deadlock at the end of the first half with a cushioned header before the England international scored an almost identical goal in the 57th minute to seal three points.
While Alli scooped the man of the match award for his goal-scoring heroics against the Premier League leaders, former Arsenal defender Keown was really impressed with Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield combination of Dembele and Victor Wanyama.
Discussing Tottenham’s 2-0 win against Chelsea to throw the title race wide open, Keown was full of praise for Belgium international Dembele.
“I spoke on Wednesday about how important wing backs Kyle Walker and Danny Rose are to the system — both were excellent again but it was the midfield pair of Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama who really impressed me,” Keown told The Daily Mail.
“Both combined physicality and the class to hold on to the ball under pressure. Dembele, in particular, carried it forward at every opportunity and Chelsea struggled to live with him.”
Tottenham hoisted themselves above Arsenal and Manchester City in the title race thanks to their 2-0 win against Chelsea.
Spurs are in third place and seven points behind Conte’s side.
