Martin Keown offers advice to Arsenal midfielder over his habit
The former Arsenal defender gives Granit Xhaka some advice about his tackling
Martin Keown has offered Granit Xhaka some advice about the Arsenal midfielder’s habit of overcommitting when an opponent is running at the Swiss star.
The Switzerland international was sent off in the second half of the north London side’s 2-1 win against promoted side Burnley at The Emirates in the Premier League last weekend.
Xhaka has now been dismissed twice in his Arsenal career so far after the £33m summer signing received a red card during a 3-2 win against Swansea City earlier this season.
The defensive midfielder is now facing a four-game suspension which has ruled Xhaka out of their FA Cup fourth-round trip to Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday evening.
Speaking to The Daily Mail ahead of Arsenal’s trip to the south coast, ex-Gunners defender Keown has explained what Xhaka must do to improve his disciplinary record.
“Granit Xhaka is falling into a habit of overcommitting when a player is running at him,” Keown said.
If you cannot get there to make a tackle then you have to slow the player down. You have to jockey with him and ferry him across the pitch.
“When the ball is there to be won, you should go and win it. But with both of his red cards for Arsenal this season, Xhaka had no chance of winning the ball and cleaned out his opponent.
“If you go in with both feet, you are off the pitch.”
Arsenal are in second place in the Premier League table and eight points adrift of leaders Chelsea with 16 games to play.
