Martin Keown reacts to Olivier Giroud’s wonder goal in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace
The Arsenal legend hails Olivier Giroud's scorpion strike as goal of the season
Martin Keown described Olivier Giroud’s first-half strike as goal of the season after Arsenal eased to a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day.
Giroud was making just his second start of the Premier League season after the France international netted the winner in a 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion in their last top-flight outing.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored an incredible scorpion goal on Boxing Day but Giroud bettered the Manchester United midfielder’s effort after the Arsenal star hooked the ball into the net with his trailing foot.
Giroud has now scored five times in the 2016-17 season so far despite starting just two Premier League games and making a further 10 appearances from the bench.
Former Arsenal defender Keown named Giroud’s unbelievable scorpion strike as the goal of the season so far.
“Well, honestly, that was an unbelievable finish. It has to be up there with the goal of the season already,” Keown told BBC Sport.
“He’s hooked that with a gadget foot – the ball is behind him and he has no right to get his foot to it.”
Arsenal are in third place in the Premier League table and nine points behind current leaders Chelsea after 20 games.
The Gunners will make the trip to Bournemouth in their next Premier League fixture on Tuesday night.
