Martin Keown: This Arsenal star guilty of naive defending
Martin Keown has some advice for Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin
Martin Keown has singled out Hector Bellerin for criticism after the full-back’s sluggish performance in Arsenal’s 3-3 draw with Bournemouth last week.
The Spain international struggled at the Vitality Stadium after Charlie Daniels managed to beat Arsenal’s fastest player for pace and fire past Gunners goalkeeper Petr Cech in the 16th minute on the south coast.
Bellerin was again at fault for Ryan Fraser’s goal which extended the home side’s lead to 3-0 after the ex-Barcelona defender was unable to prevent the Scotland international from cutting inside and beating Cech.
The 21-year-old has been one Arsene Wenger’s most-consistent players since establishing himself as a first-team regular over 24 months ago, earning a player on the 2015-16 PFA Premier League team of the year.
Arsenal legend Keown picked out Bellerin for some criticism after the six-goal thriller.
“They were completely outfought in the first half and showed a lot of defensive naivety,” Keown told The Daily Mail.
“I’m a big fan of Hector Bellerin, and you could argue he got a nudge in the back for Bournemouth’s third goal, but he’s got to be quicker out of the blocks and shield the ball better against Ryan Fraser. And he let Charlie Daniels cut inside him far too easily for the opener.”
Arsenal dropped to fifth place in the Premier League table following their 3-3 draw at Bournemouth.
The Gunners are eight points adrift of current leaders Chelsea after 20 games.
