Martin Keown: This was important about Arsenal’s win

The Arsenal legend was very pleased with a clean sheet

Martin Keown has highlighted the importance of Arsenal’s clean sheet after their 2-0 win against Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day.

The Gunners started their Premier League clash on Sunday afternoon in fourth place and 12 points behind leaders Chelsea.

However, Arsene Wenger’s players managed to calm nerves in the first half thanks to Olivier Giroud’s incredible scorpion goal at The Emirates.

Alex Iwobi added a second goal for the hosts after half-time to help the Gunners move to within nine points of leaders Chelsea.

The north London side will return to Premier League action on Tuesday night when Arsenal make the trip to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

While Giroud’s goal will naturally dominate the headlines, former Arsenal defender Keown was particularly pleased with the home side’s clean sheet.

“It’s important to keep clean sheets and build confidence,” Keown told BBC Sport.

“You want to build confidence in all departments, and defenders take pride in those clean sheets.”

Arsenal are in third place in the Premier League table as Wenger looks to win his first top-flight crown since 2003-04.
