Martin Keown: What Antonio Conte will have to do after Chelsea setback
The Arsenal legend tells the Chelsea boss to crack his whip to make sure his players are all working in unison
Martin Keown has advised Antonio Conte to show his Chelsea squad some tough love after their 2-0 loss at Tottenham Hotspur last week.
The Blues made the short trip to White Hart Lane hoping to equal Arsenal’s record of 14 successive Premier League victories but fell short against their bitter London rivals.
Dele Alli broke the deadlock in the first half after he got on the end of Christian Eriksen’s cross before the England international doubled the home side’s lead with another close-range header.
Chelsea are still five points clear of their closest rivals Liverpool after the west London outfit’s first defeat since a 3-0 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in September.
The Blues will make the trip to defending Premier League champions Leicester City in their next top-flight fixture.
Speaking to The Daily Mail, former Arsenal man Keown offered Conte some advice ahead of their return to Premier League action next weekend.
“Conte said all the right things after the defeat – that this results won’t affect them, that they will go back and study the videos etc – but the momentum you gather during such a run is the most important factor and is something you’re never really aware of until it’s gone. Until you experience that losing feeling again,” Keown said.
“Conte will have been sitting back and watching this great sequence of wins play out in front of him, but now he’ll really have to crack the whip and make sure everyone is still pulling together. There was squabbling between Diego Costa and Pedro last night, which is fine as long as there are no big issues and everyone is on the same page. It’s only one game, but Conte must ensure one game doesn’t turn into a run.”
Chelsea have only lost to Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham this season.
