Martin Keown: What is immensely impressive about this Tottenham star
The Arsenal legend heaps praise on Dele Alli for his performance in Tottenham's 2-0 win against Chelsea
Martin Keown says Dele Alli has incredible composure despite his relative inexperience after the midfielder’s man of the match performance in Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 win against Chelsea on Wednesday night.
The England international scored twice in the London derby at White Hart Lane on Wednesday night after Tottenham eased to a 2-0 win against Premier League leaders Chelsea.
Alli broke the deadlock in added time at the end of the first half with a close-range header before the 20-year-old got on the end of another Christian Eriksen cross to extend their lead in north London.
The Spurs midfielder has now scored 10 of Tottenham’s 39 goals in the Premier League to help third-placed Spurs hoist themselves above Arsenal and Manchester City in the top-four race.
Former Arsenal defender Keown singled out Alli for special praise after a mature performance against the Premier League leaders.
“Time seemed to stand still in the moments before Dele Alli scored the opener. Everyone watching knew what he was going to do, and he had to wait some time for the ball to arrive, but he stayed patient and placed a glorious header out of Thibaut Courtois’ reach,” Keown told The Daily Mail.
“He made it look easy when it was anything but. To have that level of calmness and self-assurance at such a young age on a high-pressure occasion is immensely impressive. Couple that with his ability to perfectly time late runs into the box and the 20-year-old is already showing the hallmarks of a top player.”
The former MK Dons star was named the PFA young player of the year after his return of 10 goals in 33 games to help Tottenham challenge for the 2015-16 title.
