Martin Keown: What Pep Guardiola can learn from Liverpool manager
The Arsenal legend praises Jurgen Klopp's handling of the media even in tough Liverpool moments
Martin Keown believes Pep Guardiola needs to improve his handling of the media, using Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as an example for the Manchester City boss.
Guardiola is coming under pressure at the Etihad Stadium after the Citizens lost 3-0 to Everton at Goodison Park last weekend to leave the Eastlands outfit three points adrift of second-placed Tottenham.
The ex-Barcelona manager has become increasingly prickly with the media in recent weeks after a run of results that has seen the Citizens lose two games in their last three Premier League outings.
Klopp has managed to remain largely upbeat despite his Liverpool side falling off the pace in recent weeks following back-to-back Premier League stalemate.
Speaking to The Daily Mail, former Arsenal defender Keown hinted that Guardiola could learn a thing or two from Klopp’s handling of the media ahead of Manchester City’s home clash against title rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
“I am disappointed with some of Guardiola’s performances in his press conferences. He seems to see every question as an affront and it comes across as petulant.
“We do not see this with Jurgen Klopp — I remember seeing a massive grin on his face when Liverpool lost at Burnley earlier in the season. He did well to front up after a difficult defeat.
“Of course no manager wants to get used to losing but it is important to handle yourself well in difficult situations.”
Guardiola was appointed as Manuel Pellegrini’s successor at the Etihad Stadium in 2016.
