Martin Keown’s response when asked if Chelsea will run into problems in title race
The Arsenal legend says Chelsea shouldn't read too much into their 2-0 loss at Tottenham Hotspur
Martin Keown has played down the chances of Chelsea suffering a collapse in the title race after their 2-0 loss at Tottenham Hotspur.
The west London side lost for the first time since September on Wednesday night after Tottenham scored either side of half-time to beat their derby rivals at White Hart Lane.
Antonio Conte’s side still have a five-point cushion over their closest rivals Liverpool ahead of their next Premier League fixture at defending champions Leicester City next weekend.
Chelsea had won their previous 13 games before their defeat at Tottenham after Conte switched to a 3-4-3 formation following a 3-0 loss at Arsenal in their sixth league game of the 2016-17 season.
Speaking to The Daily Mail after Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat by Mauricio Pochettino’s side, Keown played down the chances of Conte’s side faltering in the title race due to their setback at Spurs.
“No, what it shows if the quality of teams in the Premier League – especially the top six. On any given day, any team could come unstuck at one of those grounds,” Keown said.
“There is no embarrassment in losing to Tottenham, and it’s not a suggestion of Chelsea’s demise – though Spurs were able to test them more than any other team since the move to a back three.”
Chelsea finished in tenth place in the Premier League table last season.
The Blues signed five players in the summer transfer window.
