Neville issues blunt warning to Man United about Southampton in EFL Cup final
Former Manchester United defender Phil Neville says that the Red Devils will need to improve against Southampton in the EFL Cup final
Manchester United will have to play a lot better to beat Southampton in the EFL Cup final, according to Phil Neville.
The Red Devils lost 2-1 to Premier League strugglers Hull City in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final at the KCOM Stadium on Thursday night.
Jose Mourinho’s side were 2-0 winners in the first leg thanks to goals from Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini at Old Trafford but struggled badly against the Tigers.
Tom Huddlestone broke the deadlock from the penalty spot after Argentina international Marcos Rojo was holding Harry Maguire in the area.
Manchester United’s record signing Paul Pogba levelled with a close-range finish before Oumar Niasse edged the home side into a 2-1 lead.
The Red Devils went through on aggregate and Manchester United will take on Southampton at Wembley after the Saints were 2-0 aggregate winners against Liverpool.
Speaking to Sky Sports after Manchester United’s 2-1 loss to Hull, ex-defender Neville issued a stark warning to Mourinho’s side about Southampton’s capabilities.
“They will need can Van Dijk back for the final. He is a big player for the big occasion,” Neville said.
“On the counter attack, Southampton can cause Manchester United problems. Manchester United will have to play better than they did at Hull.”
