Nigel Winterburn: Arsenal will always be faced with this question

The Arsenal legend believes the Gunners will always face questions about the mental attitude

Nigel Winterburn believes Arsenal will always face questions about their mental attitude.

The Gunners went 14 games unbeaten before a trip to Goodison Park in mid December that saw the north London side suffer a 2-1 loss to Everton despite leading in the first half.

Wenger’s side had the chance to bounce back a few days later at the Etihad Stadium but Arsenal suffered back-to-back defeats after squandering another leading position to lose 2-1 to title rivals Manchester City.

Naturally, the Arsenal manager and his players were subjected to criticism after their December slump despite winning their next two Premier League games against Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion.

Former Arsenal defender Winterburn believes questions will always linger surrounding the north London club’s title challenge unless the Gunners can show more fight even when they losing.

“The problem is, every time Arsenal lose and the way that they lose, people will always ask the question whether they have the right mental attitude in certain games to turn around a situation and put it right. They did it at Bournemouth,” Winterburn told Sky Sports News HQ.

“They showed great courage but people will say look at the Everton and Manchester City games.”

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04 when Thierry Henry, Robert Pires and Patrick Vieira proved instrumental figures in their unbeaten season.

The Gunners are in fifth place in the Premier League table.
