Paul Merson: Arsene Wenger should make this Arsenal signing, he’s a natural goal-scorer

The former Arsenal midfielder wants Arsene Wenger to launch a sensational bid for Jermain Defoe

Arsenal should sign Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe to bring on in games where Arsene Wenger needs a goal, according to Paul Merson.

The England international has been one of David Moyes’s best players at Sunderland following the Scot’s appointment as Sam Allardyce’s successor in the summer.

Defoe has scored 11 goals in 20 games in the 2016-17 Premier League campaign so far, although his prolific record hasn’t been enough to keep Sunderland out of the drop zone.

Indeed, Alexis Sanchez is the only Arsenal player to have scored more goals in the Premier League this season than the former Tottenham Hotspur striker.

West Ham United were linked with a move to re-sign the centre-forward but the east London outfit are reported to have ended their interest.

Writing in his Daily Star column, Merson explained why Wenger should consider a sensational swoop for the England striker.

“Jermain Defoe shouldn’t go to West Ham. But if I was Arsene Wenger I’d buy him for Arsenal,” Merson said.

“I find it strange that West Ham want him. I think he’s a great player but they’re not going forward with him. He’s too old.

“It’s different for Arsenal. Give him an 18-month contract and he can come on in games when they need a goal.

“He’s a natural goalscorer and they don’t really have one of those. He’d get to play Champions League football as well.

“Think how good he could be making those runs with Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez supplying the passes.

“He’d have the chance to win the league at Arsenal and he’d help them a lot. Next season he could get you 20 goals.”

Arsenal started the weekend in fifth place in the Premier League table and eight points behind current leaders Chelsea.
