Paul Merson: Jose Mourinho needs to start this Man United midfielder in every game
The Arsenal legend highlights the importance of Michael Carrick to Manchester United
Paul Merson has urged Jose Mourinho to continue picking Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick.
The 35-year-old has rolled back the clock with some impressive performances in the heart of Mourinho’s midfield to help the Red Devils piece a winning run together over the past month.
Carrick has been partnered with world-record signing Paul Pogba and Spain international Ander Herrera in midfield to great effect after the Red Devils won their last eight games in all competitions.
The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was initially out of favour under Mourinho before he was restored to the Manchester United side after their disappointing run of results in October and November.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Merson explained why Carrick is so important to Manchester United manager Mourinho.
“I think he’s (Jose Mourinho) got his team now at Manchester United,” Merson said.
“He knows what his team is going to be.
“Pogba’s playing a lot further up the pitch, when Carrick plays they move the ball a lot quicker.
“I think he needs to play all the time.”
Manchester United are in sixth place in the Premier League table and three points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.
The Red Devils booked their place in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday thanks to a 4-0 victory over Reading at Old Trafford.
