Paul Merson speaks honestly about Arsenal’s title chances
The former Arsenal midfielder doesn't consider Arsene Wenger's men to be realistic title contenders
Paul Merson has admitted that he doesn’t really consider Arsenal to be potential Premier League title winners.
The Gunners are in second place in the table but eight points behind current Premier League leaders Chelsea.
Arsenal could conceivably be within two points of Antonio Conte’s side if Chelsea lose to Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night and the Gunners managed to beat the Blues at Stamford Bridge next weekend.
Arsene Wenger, who has received a four-game touchline ban for pushing a fourth official during Arsenal’s 2-1 win against Burnley last weekend, will be hoping his players can ease to victory over Watford at The Emirates on Tuesday night ahead of their short trip across the English capital to Chelsea.
Speaking to Daily Star about Arsenal’s chances of securing title glory this season, Merson said:
“Arsenal are second but no-one is really talking about them as title winners, and I can’t see them winning it if I’m being honest.
“You watch them and usually there are 12 or 13 times a season when they’re breathtaking. I’ve not seen that too many times this season.
“They are going to the well too many times against sides they should be beating. People say that’s showing character but these are teams you should be destroying.”
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table last season but ended up 10 points adrift of eventual champions Leicester City.
