Paul Merson states prediction for Man United v Wigan Athletic

The former Arsenal midfielder can't see past a comfortable win for Manchester United against Wigan

Paul Merson is backing Manchester United to beat Wigan Athletic and reach the FA Cup fifth round on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils lost 2-1 to Hull City in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final mid-week but Jose Mourinho’s side still managed to progress thanks to their 3-2 aggregate win.

Manchester United were 4-0 winners against Reading in the previous round of the FA Cup as Wayne Rooney equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 249 goals at Old Trafford before he netted his 250th strike at Stoke City in the Premier League last weekend.

Manchester United’s 2-1 loss at Hull may have booked their place in the Wembley final but it brought to an end their 17-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

Writing in his Sky Sports column ahead of Manchester United’s home clash against Wigan in the fifth round, Merson said:

“Wigan have had two big wins in the Championship against Burton and Brentford but the gulf to Manchester United is too big. I see the cup holders strolling into the fifth round.”
