Paul Merson: This would be Liverpool going backwards under Jurgen Klopp
The former Arsenal midfielder issues a stark warning to Jurgen Klopp about Liverpool's season
Paul Merson believes Liverpool would be going backwards under Jurgen Klopp unless the Reds finish in the Premier League’s top four this season.
The Merseyside outfit have endured a miserable start to 2017 after a return of one victory in eight games in all competitions to heap pressure on Klopp.
Liverpool failed to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday night as the Reds lost 1-0 to Southampton at Anfield following Shane Long’s winner.
The 18-time English champions have failed to win their last three Premier League games ahead of the visit of Premier League leaders Chelsea at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Liverpool crashed out of the FA Cup at the fourth-round stage on Saturday after a humiliating 2-0 loss to Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.
Writing in his Daily Star column, Merson had a stark warning for Klopp as Liverpool’s slide continues under the former Borussia Dortmund boss.
“If Liverpool end the season with no trophies and they don’t finish in the top four, that would be a disaster. Klopp would have taken them backwards.
“He needs time. But questions will be asked about him if that happens. That’s why Tuesday’s game against Chelsea is the biggest of Liverpool’s season.”
Liverpool are in fourth place in the Premier League table.
