Paul Merson warns Arsene Wenger: Arsenal comeback covered the cracks
Paul Merson is critical of Arsenal's performance at Bourmemouth
Paul Merson has warned Arsene Wenger that Arsenal’s 3-3 draw with Bournemouth only served to cover the cracks in the Gunners squad.
The north London side appeared to be heading for an embarrassing 3-0 defeat by Eddie Howe’s men at the Vitality Stadium after a poor performance in the opening 57 minutes on the south coast.
Arsenal did manage to fight back to rescue a point despite an abject display after goals from Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud and Lucas Perez in the final 20 minutes in Tuesday night’s clash.
The Gunners missed the chance to move to within five points of leaders Chelsea before the Blues lost 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Wednesday evening thanks to Dele Alli’s double.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ on Friday about Arsenal’s six-goal thriller, Merson was critical of Wenger’s side and played down the significance of their comeback at Bournemouth.
“They’re so many points behind. The Bournemouth result covered over the cracks,” Merson said.
“People talk about the comeback. But the first 70 minutes the Arsenal players didn’t look like they knew what they were doing.
“They were passed off the pitch. With 20 minutes to go they had nothing to lose and the shackles came off and they took a chance.”
Arsenal dropped out of the top four following Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Chelsea.
