Paul Merson warns top four: This Tottenham player is back to his best
The former Arsenal midfielder has been impressed with Dele Alli's recent performances for Tottenham Hotspur
Dele Alli is back to his best in the Tottenham Hotspur side, according to Paul Merson.
The England international scored two goals in Tottenham’s 4-1 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s on Wednesday night to help Mauricio Pochettino’s side remain on the coattails of fourth-placed Arsenal.
Alli scored his fifth and sixth Premier League goals of the 2016-17 season to suggest that the attacking midfielder is starting to rediscover his best form in a Tottenham shirt after a slow start to the campaign.
The 20-year-old was named the PFA young player of the year in April 2016 after the Tottenham playmaker scored 10 times in 33 games in his first season in the Premier League after a £5m move from MK Dons in the 2015 summer transfer window.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson has singled out Alli for special praise ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Watford at Vicarage Road on New Year’s Day.
“Dele Alli looks back to where he was last year,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“With Alli, he’s one of those players who Spurs needed to get back to where he was last season, when he won all of those accolades, and he has in the last two games – there’s no doubt about that.”
Tottenham started the weekend in fifth place in the Premier League table and a point behind fourth-placed Arsenal.
