Paul Merson: What I like about Arsenal when Olivier Giroud is playing
The Gunners legend believes Arsene Wenger has developed a Plan B for Arsenal in recent weeks
Paul Merson has welcomed that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has developed a Plan B for the Gunners in the Premier League this season.
The north London side appeared to be edging towards a goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion on Boxing Day as the Gunners looked to return to winning ways after two successive Premier League defeats.
However, Mesut Ozil’s cross picked out Olivier Giroud and the France international glanced a header past West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster on his first Premier League start of the 2016-17 season.
The French striker scored in similar fashion in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United last year after Giroud came on as a late substitute to net an added-time equaliser.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Arsenal’s clash against Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day, Merson explained what he likes about the Gunners this season under Wenger.
“The good thing I like about them, if they’re struggling, they put the ball into the box – unlike the last few years when they played it around like a power play in ice hockey, going from side to side,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“At least they put it in for Giroud and have a Plan B.”
Arsenal finished in second place in the Premier League table last season but 10 points behind champions Leicester City.
