Paul Scholes reacts to Wayne Rooney’s record-equalling goal in Man United’s 4-0 win over Reading
The Manchester United legend delivers his verdict on Wayne Rooney's 249th goal for the club
Paul Scholes heaped praise on Wayne Rooney after the Manchester United striker equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s goal record in their 4-0 win against Reading in the FA Cup third round.
The club captain broke the deadlock in the seventh minute to draw level with Charlton on 249 goals after Rooney managed to guide Juan Mata’s cross into the net.
The 31-year-old centre-forward was making just his 15 start of the season in all competitions after struggling to find form under new manager Jose Mourinho.
Rooney was unable to surpass Charlton and move onto 250 Manchester United goals despite the home side’s dominance in the second half.
Speaking during Manchester United’s 4-0 win against Reading in the FA Cup, Scholes spoke of his delight that Rooney has finally managed to reach the milestone after a long spell on 248 goals.
“It is a great achievement. Probably one of his better goals,” Scholes told BT Sport.
“It has been a long time coming. It is great for him. I’m happy for him. What a career and what a signing he has been. He still has the hunger and desire to score goals for this football club.”
Manchester United have won their last eight games in all competitions to help Mourinho’s gain much-needed momentum under Louis van Gaal’s successor.
The Red Devils will take on Liverpool in their next Premier League game.
