Paul Scholes sets Wayne Rooney challenge ahead of Man United v Liverpool
Paul Scholes wants to see Wayne Rooney break Manchester United's scoring record against Liverpool this weekend
Paul Scholes has challenged Wayne Rooney to become Manchester United’s all-time top goal-scorer by finding the net against Liverpool at the weekend.
The Manchester United striker hit the headlines on Saturday when he scored the Red Devils’ opener in their 4-0 FA Cup win over Reading at Old Trafford.
That goal moved him level with Sir Bobby Charlton on 249 goals for Manchester United and means that the striker will become the Red Devils’ all-time top goal-scorer when he next finds the net.
Manchester United take on Liverpool at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon as Jose Mourinho’s men look to close the gap to Jurgen Klopp’s side in the table.
Former Red Devils midfielder Scholes was full of praise for Rooney and his performance for Manchester United against Reading, and also admitted that he is hoping the striker breaks the record against Liverpool this weekend.
Speaking to BT Sport after Saturday’s game, Scholes said: “It’s a great achievement. He has been a sensational footballer for the club. He has won trophies.
“The thing that most impressed me is that he has been out for so long but the hunger and desire is still there. He was very good. He looked sharp and is movement was good.”
Scholes cheekily added: “Let’s hope he breaks the record against Liverpool. That would be a nice one.”
