Paul Scholes’s response when asked if Tottenham can win the title
The former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes still has doubts about Tottenham Hotspur in the title race
Paul Scholes has poured cold water on talk of Tottenham Hotspur winning the Premier League title this season.
The north London side laid down a marker in the title race after an emphatic 4-0 win against West Bromwich Albion at White Hart Lane on Saturday afternoon thanks to Harry Kane’s hat-trick and Gareth McAuley’s own goal.
Tottenham have won their last six top-flight games to bolster their chances of winning a first Premier League crown after Mauricio Pochettino’s men finished in third place in the table last term.
Pochettino’s side have only lost to Chelsea and Manchester United in the 2016-17 Premier League campaign to leave the north London side seven points behind Antonio Conte’s leaders.
Discussing whether Tottenham can win the Premier League title this season, ex-Manchester United midfielder Scholes reckons that Spurs will falter when it comes to April and May in the title race.
“Tottenham are a really, really good team. I just think they have to prove that when it comes to March and April that they can win the big games. We haven’t quite seen that,” Scholes told BT Sport.
“Is it their style of play? They do play a really quick tempo, a fast style of football – can that last until the end of the season? It didn’t last year, they just tailed off.
“I love watching Tottenham. Great manager, great team to watch. I just don’t think that when it comes to March, April, that they’ll have the bottle to go and win the big games. If Tottenham were ever going to win the league it was last year.”
England striker Kane has scored 14 times in 16 games in the Premier League this season.
