Peter Schmeichel: What I really think about Jose Mourinho at Man United
The Manchester United legend delivers his verdict on Jose Mourinho's start to life at Old Trafford
Peter Schmeichel has praised Manchester United for restoring the club’s way of playing football after the Red Devils reached the FA Cup fifth round on Sunday.
Mourinho’s side eased to a 4-0 win against Wigan Athletic in the fourth round at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon thanks to goals from Marouane Fellaini, Chris Smalling, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Bastian Schweinsteiger at Old Trafford.
Manchester United are making progress in the FA Cup an the Europa League, while the Red Devils reached their first final under Mourinho following a 3-2 aggregate win against Hull City in the EFL Cup semi-final last week.
The 20-time English champions are creeping up on the Premier League’s top four after an impressive unbeaten run in the English top flight over the past couple of months.
Speaking to Sky Sports about Manchester United’s progress under Mourinho, the club’s former goalkeeper Schmeichel said:
“I think it’s been fantastic, I expected it to be another bumpy year. Jose has inherited a squad of players and he will have had to assess every one of them.
“He is doing that quicker than I thought he would have done. Plus, the four additions in the summer [Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba], they have all been really good.
“We are getting back to a Manchester United way of playing, which I didn’t expect so quickly, so I am optimistic for the future.”
Manchester United are in sixth place in the Premier League table and 14 points adrift of current leaders Chelsea with 16 games to play.
